We got a couple of great reports from riders at the Nevada Derby endurance ride and their booted success. Congratulations!

From Karen Chaton:

We had a really terrific ride at the two day Nevada Derby endurance ride last weekend in Palomino Valley, NV. I rode Bo on the first day and Chief on the second day. Both horses have been going great all season and have completed over 750 miles between the two of them (405 for Chief, and 350 for Bo) – all using strap on Renegade® boots (or else barefoot). We’ve been fortunate enough to be able to try out the new Viper™ boot model that has several improved features over the previous Renegade® boot. These new boots are phenomenal and work so well on both of my horses. I can’t wait until they are available for others to get, as there will for sure be a lot more happy booted horses out there!

Karen and Chief

Karen and Bo

Even Chief has been unable to step or pull one of the new boots off, nor do they twist on his super round front feet when he gets excited. Bo has lots of fun hamming it up for the ride photographer when I let him – he loves to put it into high gear and take off running. We had fun doing that last Saturday – we were cantering a long and then I realized that there were some motorcycle woops in the trail directly ahead and we had to pull up rather quickly. Chief was a little more low-key when we went by the ride photographers Rene and Bill and did his standard trot-by. Both horses finished their 50′s in terrific shape, earning A’s on gait and attitude all the way through.

I am really looking forward to the rest of the ride season and being able to keep using the Renegade® and Viper™ strap on boots and not have to mess with gluing boots on. So far in all of the rides we’ve done there have been no rubs or sore spots. Thanks guys!

Karen, Bo and Chiefy

Editor’s Note: The Viper™ is a prototype Renegade® model currently undergoing extensive field testing and will be released to the market later in the year and more information will be forthcoming the closer we get to a release date.

From Diane Stevens:

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to tell you me and my hubby had a great time at the Nevada Derby this weekend. John did his second LD with Fonzie and they won. I did my first 50 of the season on Titan and got 2nd place and Titan won Best Condition! Very proud for both horses! Was lots of deep sand and long hard gravel roads! Both horses has strap ons on the front! Renegades Rock!

Cheers,
Diane

The inaugural “Lead, Follow, or Get Out of My Way at Bumble Bee Ranch” endurance ride was held on January 5, 2013 at the Bumble Bee Ranch in Bumble Bee, AZ, roughly 50 miles north of Phoenix.

There was a great turnout of 69 riders between the 25 and 50-mile distances. Renegades were well-represented, with close to two dozen riders and their booted horses sporting a variety of Renegade® colors!

Ride photographer Susan Kordish of Cowgirl Photography took some beautiful ride photos. We’ve posted several here, and she has even more at the ride gallery on her website: Bumble Bee-2013-Lead, Follow or Get Out of My Way.

Thanks to ride management for putting on a wonderful ride, and thank you to all the riders who came out! A great way to start off the 2013 ride season!

We received this great letter from natural hoof care providers and endurance riders Jen Clingly and Jeremy Ford of Wild About Hooves in Australia. We’re thrilled to hear about their success in using and competing in Renegade® Hoof Boots!

We are so pleased to advise that all three horses from our farm “the Gem” successfully completed the 160km/100mile endurance championships in glue on boots to finish third in their divisions. It was a concussive ride underfoot. The weather was hot and only 40% of the field successfully completed the tough course.

Our horses pulled up sound and fit to go again. They looked a million dollars the following day and Diamond Tail Desert Opal won “Best Conditioned” horse.

So that is the close of the season here in Australia and I am rapt to report I have finished on top of the ladder in the lightweight division:
Top Distance Rider
Top Distance Horse
Top Points Horse
Top Points Rider

Jeremy, too, finished the year as Top Heavyweight Distance Rider and Top Heavyweight Distance Horse.

The Renegade® boots are unfaultable! Both the slip on and glue ons have proven time and time again that shoes are not necessary for long distance riding. Our horses travel far and fast in them. And — woo hoo! — have finished top of the state as champions at endurance.

Only thing we got caught out with was not scuffing out the boot prior to gluing. Lost one as the adhere only stuck to the hoof wall. Totally our fault – didn’t check them and were on a mission to get organised for an event.

So it is with the sincerest thanks and gratitude for your support. We are looking forward to giving Renegades the biggest rap at the presentation award night.

Thank you from all at WILD ABOUT HOOVES.

I live in central PA and I’ve been using Renegades on my Morgan gelding, Dugan, for a little over two years now. He’s 13 and has never been shod in his life. His front feet are wide and round, and the Rens size 2 fit him perfectly – he’s a little 14.2 guy with big feet! More recently, I started booting his hind feet as well, although most of our training rides and even many CTRs and endurance rides he does with bare hinds. I find that the studded boots are really great for the hind feet, especially if the footing is at all slippery.

I love that the parts are replaceable. For example, Dugan is hard on the toes of his front boots, so I have replaced the bottoms twice already, with a different color each time, but did not have to replace the heel captivators, so he now has boots with mix and match colors, which are very cool :-) People are amazed when they see how fast I can put the boots on and take them off. I’ve never had to talk anyone into getting Rens – they see the ease and reliability and they want them!

Tevis 2012 was a great year for Renegade® Hoof Boots! A huge congratulations goes out to those riders who signed up and rode in Renegades.

Renegades were first used at Tevis in 2009, and each year has seen an increase in the numbers of riders who are using them. This year, 13 riders started in Renegades: 10 in Renegade® Pro-Comp Glue-Ons, and 3 in Renegade® strap-ons.

Ultimately, six of those riders crossed the finish line, four in glue-ons and two in strap-ons.

This year, Renegades once again proved that a strap-on hoof boot made for the barefoot performance horse can successfully conquer the trail and ride known as “The world’s best known and most difficult Equestrian Endurance Ride.”

Tevis 2012 saw a high number of sign-ups: 204 riders (2004 was the last year to have over 200 riders) started out of Robie Park at 5:15 in the morning on Saturday, August 4th. 24 hours and 100 miles later, 98 of those riders had crossed the finish line in Auburn for a 48% completion rate, right in line with the Tevis average of an approximately 50% completion rate.

Thursday and Friday, Renegade® Pro-Comp Glue-ons were applied to those horses whose riders chose the glue-ons as their method of hoof protection. Here, Chad Larsen boots Terry Banister’s Arabian gelding Ferrari.

Rider check-in starts at Robie Park, located just south of Truckee, CA, on Friday at noon. Riders collect their information packets, make sure all release forms are signed, then are free to take their horses to the preliminary vet-in exam.

Karen Chaton and Bo go through the initial vet check on Friday afternoon at Robie Park. All horses must pass this initial check before being allowed to start – vets want to ensure that all horses who are starting are fit and metabolically and physically sound enough to at least start such a demanding ride. The horse’s pulse is taken, hydration levels and gut sounds are checked, and the horse and rider are asked to do an out-and-back in-hand trot-out to check for soundness.

Hannah and Krusador finished in 27th place, wearing strap-on Renegades.

Horses’ pulses are taken, and once they reach the mandatory pulse requirement, they are sent into the vet line, where the vets examine them for hydration, check their gut sounds to make sure they’re eating, check for any soreness, and finally, the horse is trotted out in-hand to check for soundness.

Joyce Corbett from Australia trots out Cytron at the Robinson Flat check. Vets are checking for lameness, making sure the horses are still moving freely and forward. The Tevis is a difficult ride with a lot of rocks and technical trail, and lameness typically accounts for roughly 1/3 of the pulls every year.

After their one-hour hold is up, Karen Chaton and Bo exit the Robinson Flat check. Both horse and rider have used the hour they have at this hold to rest, eat, and drink before heading out to tackle the trail again.

The one-hour hold is timed: riders aren’t allowed to leave before their time is up, and must check in with their rider cards with the out-timer before continuing on the trail. Molly Perkins and Doll wait for the ‘okay’ to leave the Robinson Flat check.

Safety riders – the Sweep Riders of the Sierras – follow behind the last of the riders, able to provide radio and basic first aid assistance should the need arise. They divide the 100 miles into segments, and each pair of riders typically covers one segment of the trail. A couple of the sweep riders this year were wearing Renegades!

Partway between the Robinson Flat vet check and the Foresthill vet check is the town of Michigan Bluff. It’s located at the top of the climb out of El Dorado canyon, the second of the three canyons horse and rider must traverse in the heat of the day, and water troughs are set up in the street – a welcome, cooling pause for horse and rider. Here, Hannah Pruss and Krusador trot into town – their Renegades provide them traction and shock absorption on the pavement and allow them to make time through town.

Another view of Michigan Bluff. Foresthill is the second of the one-hour holds on the ride, at approximately 68 miles into the ride.

After cooling down at Bath Road, Hannah and Krusador will go to the P&R (Pulse & Respiration) area. After Krusador’s pulse is checked and found to be down to the required parameters, they go over to the vet check for another thorough check of metabolics and another trot-out.

Riders have 24 hours to complete the ride, including the mandatory vet holds as well as the numerous other vet checks throughout the ride.
Diane Stevens (at left) and Clare Fleming both successfully crossed the finish line with time to spare.

Congratulations to all of our Renegade® horses and riders! You are all an amazing group of athletes and we couldn’t be more proud of you!

We’re already planning for Tevis 2013. Who wants to join us?

Here are two pics from the Endurance ride last week at Whakamaru. The first ride for the season over here.

Kaye riding Sharm El Sheikh (Echo) and me riding Marvae Gai Legend (Legend). We only did a little 40km and achieved it in 3:50hrs. Legend bucked and carried on for over 5kms. And pulled for the whole 40km. I have been sore all last week. Just coming right. Have taken him out of the Hackamore and put him in a bit. Hopefully all will be better.

Kaye’s horse in Sport Orange and Legend in Arizona Copper (with Orange captivators on the hinds). Have finally got Legend’s hinds sorted. Took him up a size to #1 with #0 captivators (the stiffer ones I brought back with me (thank you)). This has proved very successful. No more twisting. Even after the performance he put on.

Off to another this weekend and have plans for rides every 2nd weekend through the summer.

Cheers,
Pete
