One thing that we will encounter when it comes to sizing and measuring is getting dimensions of a hoof that are wider than they are long. While we occasionally will find a hoof that truly does measure wider than long, more often it is simply that the measurements have not been taken correctly, or perhaps the hoof form needs to be evaluated to ensure that the heels are not long and underrun, presenting a weight-bearing surface that is artificially short.

If the edge of the heels is sitting significantly further forward than the back edge of the frog, that is often an indication that the heels are long, either very tall and upright, or running forward and low. In either case, they are hoof forms that are not as desirable for successful use of the Renegade® Hoof Boot, and steps should be taken to address the hoof form. Ideally, the back edge of the frog and the back edge of the heels should be in alignment with each other, creating an even line — and the point to bring the length measurement to.

These examples are shown on our sizing directions, as they demonstrate a well-balanced hoof with heels and frog both incorporated into an even weight-bearing surface.

We encourage anyone with sizing questions to please email your sizing photos to us at products@renegadebootstore.com for evaluation, especially if it doesn’t appear like we have a size that will fit your horse’s measurements. We are happy to verify hoof measurements, and recommend the best size and boot model.
